Do Men Need to Moisturize their Faces?

Do men really need to use a face moisturizer?

What does this moisturizer actually do? Is this just another marketing ploy to get us to buy more grooming products?

If I'm honest... I've asked myself this question a lot. And as I learn more about men's grooming, I'm learning what is essential and what isn't.

...so should you use a men's face moisturizer

The answer is unmistakably - yes.

In this mini-blog I'm going to explain why a good face moisturizer for men is such an important part of your daily routine.

What does Face Moisturzer actually do?

  1. It rehydrates your face when it's dry.
  2. It prevents your skin from drying out again by forming a protective barrier again outside elements like cold weather.
  3. It reduces the appearance of fine lines / wrinkles by filling in these "valleys" in your skin.

Your skin is made up of many layers.

The stratum corneum is the most outer layer and it protects your body's internal structures from injury and bacteria.

Its purpose is similar to that of a car's paintwork. It protects what's underneath it.

But the stratum corneum can't do its job if it doesn't have sufficient moisture.

Your skin needs moisture to prevent bacteria growth, build new skin cells and to keep its elasticity. (Without water, your skin would rip or tear with every movement.)

Why do I need a Face Moisturizer?

You may ask - surely my skin should moisturize itself naturally?

It does.

Your skin produces sebum oil which it uses to reduce moisture loss from your skin's surface by evaporation.

But you put your face through a lot.

Think about it - you wash it twice daily (I hope), you shave, and unless you walk around naked, your face is likely the most exposed part of your body during the day.

This means that on top of the natural evaporation which occurs, your face is subjected to cold weather, pollution, wind, UV rays and a number of other elements which all help dry it out and damage its protective barrier.

(And its also likely you don't drink enough water.)

So yes - your face needs a helping hand. A good, natural men's face moisturizer is essential to maintain healthy, hydrated skin.
