New Years Resolutions Worth Sticking To (Resolutions For 2023)

Let’s face the facts: 2022 has been a bit of a grind. Come to think of it, the last three years haven’t exactly been easy, what with global pandemics to contend with!

However, with the new year upon us, now’s the time to hit the reset button and get your health and wellness goals back in check. It’s an opportunity to drag yourself out of the rut and start embracing the new and improved you.

If you’re looking to round out your New Year’s Resolutions, then your health should be top of your priority list. And health starts with self-care, which is the best way to maintain your physical, mental, and emotional wellness.

In this article, we show you the resolutions that all men should be incorporating into their lives this year. Read on to discover how you can make them a part of your daily routine.

Develop an exercise plan

Many of us make a new year’s resolution to “get fit”. Unfortunately, it’s a resolution that never seems to last more than a few weeks.

What you need is a plan. Even better, you need a plan that you can stick to.

If you’re someone that’s gained a few pounds in the last year, you’re not alone. However, it’s vital that you maintain a healthy weight to keep your physical and mental health in order.

You can start by setting aside half an hour a day. This could be before work, during your lunch break, after dinner — whatever works best for you. This way, you’ll get your body moving and reap the rewards.

Whether you’re stretching, walking, running, or lifting weights, it doesn’t matter what you do. What matters is that you’re doing something to work up a sweat and boost your cardiovascular fitness.

Make a date with your GP

When was the last time you checked in with your GP? Chances are you can’t remember — which means it’s been far too long!

If you really want to start the year with a fresh slate, then make an appointment with your GP today. After all, it’s one resolution that can be done and dusted in less than 20 minutes!

For some strange reason, us fellas are less inclined to visit the doctor than women. And there are many reasons for this, most notably because we’re stubborn. Does this remind you of anyone?

There’s no point embarking on the new year with health complaints that could easily be remedied. The attitude that “everything’s fine” won’t make those niggly issues disappear. Instead, get yourself a full check-up and take control of your health.

Add more veggies to your diet

The best diet for men wanting to stay in shape is one that includes a variety of foods from all five food groups. There should be a focus on consuming enough fiber from plant foods like vegetables, fruits, legumes, and whole grains.

By upping your vegetables and reducing your intake of processed meats like salami, you may decrease your risk of adverse health issues. This means you reduce the chances of suffering from stroke, diabetes, heart disease, and erectile dysfunction.

You can start small by trying a meat-free meal once or twice a week. Just remember to fill your plate with nutrient-rich vegetables, beans, grains, legumes, and healthy fats.

Practice mindfulness

Mindfulness techniques like deep breathing, meditation, and yoga can have a massive impact on men’s mental health. Not only can they lower blood pressure but they can also significantly reduce stress levels. This contributes to a boost in happiness and mental wellbeing.

If you’re new to mindfulness, consider testing out the different methods to see which suits you the most. You could do some yoga after a workout to cool down physically and mentally, or you could spend 10 minutes at work to mediate and collect your thoughts.

No matter which practice works best for you, taking a few minutes each day to refocus your thoughts and concentrate on your breathing can have both short-term and long-term health benefits.

Get some more sleep

We all know that not getting enough shut eye can make us grouchy. But how much sleep should men really be getting? The answer is at least eight hours a night.

High-quality sleep is a critical contributor to men’s overall health. It works to keep your hormones and appetite in balance, while improving both mood and heart health.

Oh, and one other thing: Just because there are some CEOs that claim they can get by on four hours’ sleep per night, this is no excuse for you to neglect your body’s needs (and crawl into bed so late each night).

To improve your sleep, consider eating melatonin-heavy snacks before bed and putting away electronic devices. This will help you to slow your thoughts and fall asleep in time to achieve enough rest.

Re-evaluate your grooming routine

No matter how old you are, you should be prioritizing your skin and hair health. This is especially true in the colder, dry months when skin and hair can easily be affected and become damaged.

Start by developing a night-time routine that focuses on areas you want to improve. If you’re a guy with dry skin, plan to use an exfoliating face scrub to reduce flakiness. Or, if you’re worried about your receding hairline, you can incorporate hair thickening shampoos and conditioners into your daily grooming routine.

When your skin and hair look their best, you’re certain to feel more confident. And this confidence not only improves your emotional health but also helps you focus your mental energy towards achieving your goals.
