Can Men Use Women's Skincare Products?

If you google 'moisturizer' you'll likely find pages and pages of products designed for women.

The fact is, there are more women buying skincare products than there are men. As such, finding dedicated skincare for guys can be tricky.

So what's a stylish guy to do? Blindly use a female skincare product and hope it does the job?

Slow up there, buddy. That might not be such a good idea. There are a few things you need to know before you decide to throw in the towel and purchase the first product you see.

In today's article, we're breaking out the differences between men and women's skincare and why you should DEFINITELY invest in products designed for men.

What's The Difference Between Men And Women's Skin?

Ah, the all-important question! And the answer is — a lot!

Let's take a look into the significant factors that differentiate men's skin from women's…

Facial Hair and Shaving

Men have more hair follicles than women and they're also larger and more concentrated on the face and neck area. This is why men usually have more facial hair than women and also explains why it can be difficult to remove it - shaving is often the go-to solution.

Unfortunately, shaving your facial hair regularly stresses or irritates your skin and causes razor burn, cuts, and bumps, so it's important to focus your skincare routine around this!

Thickness and Collagen

In general, men’s skin is typically thicker than women’s skin by up to 30%! Plus, our skin also produces more collagen, making it tighter and firmer. But while collagen levels in us guys reduce consistently over time, female collagen typically reduces dramatically after menopause.

Since men's skin is thicker and firmer, it ages better than the average woman's, retaining its youthfulness for longer.

But here's the catch — when your skin decides it's finally time to start the aging process, the changes occur faster. Men are also more prone to saggy eyes, dark circles, and fully grooved wrinkles.

Oiliness

Men's skin produces more oil (sebum) than females' because they have larger pores and more active sebaceous glands.

This means that guys are more prone to acne and less at risk of dry skin than ladies, so it's important to use products that combat both conditions in the right way and not overload your skin with too many ingredients at once (we know how that goes!).

Is There A Difference Between Men And Women’s Skincare Products?

Since men and women have varying skin needs, it only makes sense that they'll have different skincare products, right? Yes, we know that guy’s products come in simpler packages and less colorful bottles. But is that all there is to it? Absolutely not!

One significant difference between men's and women's skincare products is the ingredients. Men's products often have active ingredients like menthol and mint to help cool and soothe the skin after shaving.

And since men's skin is usually oilier, products also contain ingredients like clay to help control shine and oil production.

Men's skincare products also tend to contain harsher chemicals such as sulfates and alcohol to remove dirt and oil from the skin, but that doesn't have to be the case!

You see, these harsh sulfates and alcohols can actually strip away the natural oils that keep your skin healthy, leading to dryness, irritation, and even breakouts.

So, what's the verdict?

Men need products that address their specific skin concerns, such as oil production and shaving irritation, whilst also being gentle enough for everyday use. We know it sounds like a lot, but don't worry, we've got you covered!

Can Men Use Women's Skincare Products?

The truth is that women's skincare products contain active ingredients that may also work for men too. But just because you can use ladies' products doesn't mean it's a great idea…

Many ingredients in women's skincare products are unnecessary for your skin. They also don't contain the special ingredients that attend to men’s unique skin needs.

Not only that, but you may find that some of the ingredients in women's skincare products are too moisturizing and can clog your pores, leading to more breakouts and overall skin congestion!

So with all that being said, your best bet is to use men's products intended for you!
